The Opening Weekend Full of Discovery

The festivities begin on 24 May with a full activity day in Exchange Square and the Picturehouse, where the festival officially launches. Visitors can enjoy “Talking Chester” film premieres, heritage discussions and plenty of family-friendly entertainment, all free to attend. Throughout Grosvenor Park, families can dive into Little History Games, fun yet straightforward outdoor activities that make learning about the past a playful adventure.

Children and adults alike will enjoy the Lego Chester treasure hunt at New Chester Market, which invites visitors to explore a miniature version of the city with a twist of imagination. Meanwhile, historical re-enactments and themed activities like Grotesque Roman Medicine and Roman Zumba inject a dose of theatrical flair into the weekend, offering interactive ways to learn about Chester’s roots.

There are also plenty of talks to enjoy, including illustrated discussions about local stained glass artist Trena Cox, the upcoming 500th anniversary of Chester Racecourse, and even a Q&A with actor Ian Puleston-Davies. A lively mix of education and entertainment sets the tone for the days ahead.

Experiences Across the Week

Visitors can look forward to a rich mix of cultural activities, performances, and themed walks as the week unfolds. Morning sessions in the Amphitheatre offer the chance to participate in dance aerobics, yoga, and flamenco in a truly iconic setting. These events are open to all ages and fitness levels and provide an energetic way to engage with historic surroundings.

At Chester Cathedral, daily family activities such as stained glass workshops and badge-making continue throughout the week, allowing younger visitors to create something special while learning about the city’s religious and artistic heritage. The Chester Cathedral LEGO Experience, available for a limited time, is another highlight, with a massive 270,000-brick model of the Cathedral open for interior viewing.

The festival also features concerts, guided walks and thought-provoking talks. From Indian classical music to poetry readings, stories of Chester’s long-lost buildings, and insights into local industries, there’s something to spark everyone’s interest. The popular Courtyards and Lanes of Chester tour and evening storytelling experiences like Midsummer Gothic and Dinner and Storytelling for Grown Ups promise memorable moments for those keen to explore the city’s more atmospheric corners.

A Festival That Welcomes Everyone

Inclusivity is central to the Chester Heritage Festival, and this year’s programme strongly focuses on accessibility. Multiple self-guided walking trails designed with all abilities in mind are available, including the No Steps Chester Trail and the Tactile Trail, which explores history through touch and sensory experience. The Quiet Spaces Trail invites visitors to escape the busy streets and find calm in Chester’s hidden gardens and courtyards.

At Chester Taxis, we share this commitment to accessibility. Our fleet includes wheelchair-accessible minibuses, and all our drivers are DBS-checked and licensed by Cheshire West and Chester Council. We take great pride in ensuring everyone can reach their destination safely and efficiently, whether travelling to a single event or exploring multiple locations throughout the day.

Explore Chester’s Living History

What makes Chester Heritage Festival so special is its ability to animate the city’s past in engaging, hands-on and often surprising ways. You might find yourself listening to a pianist in a Roman garden one moment, and building a community mosaic the next. Perhaps you’ll discover a story about a lost church, or uncover the life of a woman who raised 15 sets of twins. Every corner of the city becomes a stage for the stories that have shaped it.

With so many venues involved—from libraries and churches to parks, museums, and high-street shops—the festival invites locals and visitors alike to see Chester through fresh eyes. It encourages wandering, learning, and celebrating the city’s identity in all its layers.

Your Festival Awaits

Chester Heritage Festival is more than a calendar of events. It is a chance to connect with the city, its history, and one another. The stories shared throughout this festival are not just about what has come before, but about the people and communities who continue to shape Chester today.

As you plan your festival days, Chester Taxi Services is here to help you travel smoothly between events, safely return home after an evening walk, or enjoy a relaxed ride into the city. From family outings to evening adventures, we’ll get you there with comfort and care so you can focus on the experience, not the journey.

Let this year’s Chester Heritage Festival be your invitation to step into the story and make memories to carry into the future.
