Chester Racecourse also called the Roodee, is the oldest racecourse in use in England, where horses have raced since the 16th-century. The course which is 1.8 km or one mile and one furlong, and is one of the smallest in the country.
The History of Chester Racecourse
The first horse races were held at the course in 1539. Races were originally held on Shrove Tuesday until 1609 when the date was changed to St. George's Day. In 1766 the first May Festival was celebrated at the course, followed by the Tradesman's Cup which later became the Chester Cup Race, in 1824.

Special Racing Events
The racing season at Roodee begins with Chester Cup Day in May. Boodles Ladies Day is the day that the ladies get dressed up to be seen at the racecourse. Boodles City Day gives you the opportunity to see some of the season's up and coming horses. Roman Day features Roman soldiers and chariot races. Summer Saturday is a great way to spend the day at the races with friends to celebrate the arrival of summer. Ladies Evening at the end of June features seven exciting races. City Plate Day in July is the day that everyone comes to the races.
Midsummer Meeting in the last week in July celebrates the middle of summer. Family Funday in August is delightful for a family outing. Chester Stakes Day is celebrated in September to observe the longtime affiliation between the Roodee and the City of Chester. Mid-September is the time to celebrate the Autumn Festival at the Chester Racecourse. The Season Finale and the end of the racing season are at the end of September. You won't want to miss the last races of the season.
Polo Tournaments
Polo events are one of the most exciting ways to team sports live. Get together with friends and head out to Chester Racecourse for two events. The LDF International Tournament is in June, and the Roodee Challenge Cup is in September. On the second day of each event, there are special free events for families to enjoy.
