Manchester Airport has changed considerably since we first looked at its redevelopment several years ago. For passengers travelling from Chester in 2027, the biggest change may be that the airport’s £1.3 billion transformation programme has reshaped where most passengers check in, pass through security, and begin their journey.
Terminal 2 is now the main passenger terminal, with the decade-long redevelopment creating a much larger building with new check-in areas, security facilities, departure lounges, shops, restaurants and boarding facilities.
Airlines have also moved to different terminals. If you have used Manchester Airport regularly over the years, it is worth forgetting your old routine and checking your terminal before leaving home.
For passengers travelling from Chester, here is what Manchester Airport looks like as we head into 2027.

Terminal 2 Is Now the Main Terminal
The £1.3 billion Manchester Airport Transformation Programme has centred on Terminal 2, more than doubling its original size and bringing the older parts of the building up to the standard of the extension that opened in 2021.
The completed terminal has significantly more room for passengers, modern check-in facilities and new security equipment, as well as additional aircraft stands and boarding gates.
More importantly for regular travellers, Terminal 2 is no longer simply one of several roughly equal terminals. It has become the main passenger terminal at Manchester Airport.
All airlines other than Ryanair have moved to Terminal 2, while Ryanair operates from Terminal 3.
That makes checking your terminal particularly important if you have not travelled from Manchester Airport recently. An airline that you remember using from Terminal 1 or another part of the airport may now depart from Terminal 2.
The End Of Terminal 1
For generations of passengers across Chester and the North West, Terminal 1 was synonymous with Manchester Airport.
That changed as the Terminal 2 redevelopment reached its final stages. Airlines were progressively transferred from Terminal 1 into the enlarged Terminal 2, allowing the familiar passenger areas of Terminal 1 to close.
Parts of the old terminal are being repurposed as Manchester Airport continues work on Terminal 3, but passengers should no longer assume that an airline they previously used from Terminal 1 will still be there.
If it has been a couple of years since your last flight from Manchester, the airport may therefore feel surprisingly different.
A Much Bigger Departure Experience
The transformation is about more than check-in desks and boarding gates. Terminal 2 has gained a substantial new selection of places to eat, drink and shop.
The expanded departure area includes familiar names such as Starbucks, Joe & The Juice, Upper Crust, Pandora, Rituals and LEGO, together with a much larger World Duty Free area and more premium shopping.
One of the more interesting additions is the Great Northern Market, which opened in February 2026. Rather than being a conventional airport food court, it takes inspiration from the market hall dining found around Manchester.
Passengers can choose from several kitchens around a shared seating area, including options covering burgers, Mediterranean food, Mexican dishes, pizza and pan-Asian food.
Manchester Airport’s first Wetherspoon pub, The Belle Vue, also joins the Terminal 2 food and drink offering, alongside existing bars, cafés and restaurants.
For passengers who like to arrive with enough time to have breakfast, lunch or a drink before flying, there is now considerably more choice than there was during the redevelopment years.
A Piece Of Terminal 1 Has Survived
One particularly nice feature of the new Terminal 2 connects the modern airport with Manchester Airport’s past.
Parts of the famous chandeliers that once hung in Terminal 1 have been used to create a new artwork in Terminal 2.
The installation uses 517 teardrop-shaped glass pieces from the original chandeliers, suspended within a new artwork in the eastern security hall.
Passengers who remember travelling through Terminal 1 decades ago may recognise the connection, even though the artwork itself has been completely reimagined for the new building.
More Destinations From Manchester
The redevelopment has taken place alongside continued expansion of Manchester Airport’s flight network.
More than 200 destinations are available from the airport, covering European holiday destinations as well as long-haul connections.
During 2025 and 2026, new and returning routes included destinations such as Bangkok, Mumbai, Delhi, Islamabad, Lahore, Montpellier, Bari and several Mediterranean destinations.
Manchester Airport has also continued to expand its long-haul connections. Virgin Atlantic, for example, announced additional Orlando capacity for 2026 and further increases expected for summer 2027.
Routes and schedules change between seasons, so passengers should always check directly with their airline when planning a journey.
Check Your Terminal Before Leaving Chester
This is probably the most useful piece of advice we can give anyone travelling to Manchester Airport in 2027.
Do not rely on where you flew from last time.
With the closure of Terminal 1 passenger facilities and the movement of airlines into Terminal 2, old habits can easily lead you to the wrong part of the airport.
Your airline booking confirmation should show your departure terminal, but it is sensible to check again shortly before travelling.
When booking your Chester to Manchester Airport journey, having your airline and flight information ready also helps us plan the correct drop-off point.
Manchester Airport Drop-Off And Pick-Up
Manchester Airport uses designated areas for dropping off and collecting passengers, and these have also changed over recent years.
Terminal 2 has a paid forecourt drop-off area close to the terminal. The airport currently uses a barrierless system with number plate recognition, with the appropriate charge paid online after using the area.
Pick-ups operate differently and passengers should not arrange to be collected from the terminal drop-off zone. Manchester Airport warns that vehicles attempting to collect passengers there can receive a substantial charge.
Terminal 2 collections use the designated parking facilities, including the West Multi Storey Car Park.
We have more information about the different arrangements in our Manchester Airport drop-off and pick-up areas information.
Travelling From Chester To Manchester Airport
Manchester Airport is less than 35 miles from Chester, with the M56 providing the main road route towards the airport.
Journey times vary considerably according to traffic, roadworks, accidents and the time of day. In lighter traffic the journey can be around 40 minutes, but it is sensible to leave additional time, particularly during weekday commuter periods and busy holiday dates.
If you are deciding between different ways of reaching the airport, our comparison of taxis vs trains for airport travel from Chester looks at some of the practical differences.
A taxi has the advantage of collecting you directly from home and taking you to the appropriate terminal, which can be particularly useful for early flights, families, larger groups or passengers travelling with several cases.
Early Morning Flights From Manchester
An early flight can mean leaving Chester long before normal commuter traffic begins.
Although quieter roads can shorten the journey, an early departure also means arranging transport at a time when public transport choices may be limited. Pre-booking your airport taxi means your collection can be arranged around the time you need to check in rather than around a train or bus timetable.
It is also worth remembering that airport activity begins very early. School holidays, bank holiday weekends and popular summer departure dates can still result in busy check-in and security areas first thing in the morning.
Allow enough time for the journey, bag drop, security and the walk to your gate rather than planning everything around the quickest possible drive from Chester.
Returning To Manchester Airport
The changes at Manchester Airport also affect passengers arriving home.
If you have arranged a taxi back to Chester, knowing the correct arrivals terminal makes meeting your driver much easier.
Our airport transfer taxis service includes flight monitoring, so we can check the actual arrival of your flight rather than relying solely on its original scheduled time.
Our meet and greet service also means your driver can meet you in arrivals and help with your luggage. After a long flight, that can be considerably easier than finding your way to public transport or trying to arrange a journey after landing.
Travelling With Families and Larger Groups
Airport journeys often involve far more luggage than an everyday taxi trip.
Families may have several suitcases, hand luggage and pushchairs, while groups travelling together may need additional passenger and luggage capacity.
Chester Taxi Services has 8-seater minibuses available for larger parties, allowing groups to travel to Manchester Airport together rather than arranging several separate cars.
Wheelchair-friendly minibuses are also available. If you require a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, let us know the wheelchair dimensions when booking so that the appropriate vehicle can be arranged.
Manchester Airport into 2027
Manchester Airport in 2027 is very different from the airport passengers used when its Terminal 2 redevelopment was still surrounded by temporary routes, construction work, and phased openings.
Terminal 2 is now at the centre of the passenger experience, Terminal 1’s familiar passenger areas have closed, Terminal 3 continues to serve Ryanair, and the airport has a considerably larger range of shops, restaurants and passenger facilities.
The main thing to remember is simple: check your flight, check your terminal and leave enough time to get there.
For passengers travelling from Chester, Chester Taxi Services provides pre-booked airport transfers to Manchester Airport throughout the day and night. We can collect you from your home, hotel or another address in Chester and take you directly to the correct terminal.
For return journeys, we monitor your flight and can meet you in arrivals, helping make the final journey back to Chester straightforward after your trip.
